The College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at the University of Baghdad discussed a master’s thesis by Safa Jassim Mohammed entitled “Analysis of Mental Toughness and Information Processing and Their Relationship with Decision-Making among Basketball Referees.”
The study examined mental toughness, information processing, and their relationship with decision-making among first- and second-division basketball referees during the 2025–2026 season. It also aimed to develop and standardize a mental toughness scale suitable for the Iraqi refereeing environment and to identify the levels of mental toughness, information processing, and decision-making among referees.
The study emphasized the importance of these psychological and cognitive factors in improving refereeing performance, particularly given the psychological pressure and rapidly changing situations inherent in basketball. The researcher concluded that mental toughness and information processing are key factors in improving referees’ decision-making quality and recommended specialized psychological and cognitive training programs to strengthen these abilities and enhance refereeing accuracy.
