The Dean of the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at the University of Baghdad, Prof. Sabah Qasim Khalaf, received Prof. Mustafa Saleh Mahdi, a faculty member at the college, on the occasion of the official approval of his scientific study on the new weight categories adopted for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
This approval followed a competitive scientific evaluation that included several studies submitted by researchers and specialists, from which only three studies were selected. Prof. Mahdi’s study received unanimous scientific endorsement due to its methodological precision and forward-looking vision that serves the requirements of future Olympic competitions. Notably, he is the first Arab researcher whose study has been officially adopted in the Olympic Games framework.
During the meeting, the Dean expressed pride in this scientific achievement, emphasizing that it reflects the advanced academic and research standards of the college’s faculty. He also praised the sustained efforts of the teaching staff and reaffirmed the college’s ongoing support for scientific research that contributes to the development of sport at both local and international levels.
For his part, Prof. Mustafa Saleh Mahdi expressed his sincere appreciation to the college’s administration for its continuous support and encouragement. He noted that implementation of the new weight categories will begin in the eighth month of the coming year, after which they will be officially adopted as Olympic weight categories for the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
The meeting concluded with an emphasis on the importance of continuing to support scientific research and strengthening academic participation in international forums, in a manner that enhances the reputation of the college and Iraqi academic institutions.
