The Iraqi Universities Athletics Championship kicked off at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at the University of Baghdad, held at the college’s main athletics track. The event is organized by the Supervision and Scientific Evaluation Body – Student Activities Department, under the patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, and the supervision of the President of the University of Baghdad, Dr. Baha Ibrahim Ensaf.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Dean of the College, Dr. Sabah Qasim Khalaf, the Head of the Theoretical Sciences Branch, Dr. Faleh Hashem Finjan, and the Director of the Student Activities Department at the University of Baghdad, Dr. Ali Sadiq Dhiab, along with the participation of more than 70 public and private universities.
The competitions on the first day included both morning and evening sessions, featuring a variety of events such as the long jump, various running races, hammer throw, and javelin throw. The college actively participated through the talents of its students, who represented the University of Baghdad team, with supervision and refereeing provided by the faculty members of the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences.
This year’s championship stood out for the significant participation from most Iraqi universities, with a high number of students competing across all events for both male and female categories. A spirit of competitiveness and perseverance was evident as students strived to achieve top results.
This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 4 (Quality Education), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
