Under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the supervision of Professor Dr. Baha Ibrahim Ensaf, President of the University of Baghdad, the College of Physical Education and Sport Sciences inaugurated the 4th International Scientific Conference on Sports Sciences and Technology for Sustainable Development on Thursday, April 10, 2025. The conference, held under the theme “Sports and Technology for Sustainable Development,” will run through April 12, 2025.
The opening ceremony commenced with recitations from the Holy Quran, the Iraqi national anthem, and a moment of silence in honor of Iraq’s martyrs. Subsequent speeches were delivered by representatives of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the President of the University of Baghdad, and the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Sabah Qasim Khalaf, who also serves as the conference chair. The ceremony featured traditional musical performances and a historical tableau highlighting the role of Iraqi women, presented by female students from the college. Documentary films about the University of Baghdad and the College of Physical Education and Sport Sciences were also showcased.
A panel discussion titled “The Role of Universities and Government Institutions in Managing the Sports Environment and Sustainable Development” included contributions from:
•Professor Dr. Salah Hadi Saleh Al-Fatlawi, Head of the Supervision and Scientific Evaluation Apparatus at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research
•Professor Dr. Baha Ibrahim Ensaf, President of the University of Baghdad
•Professor Dr. Sabah Qasim Khalaf, Dean of the College of Physical Education and Sport Sciences and Conference Chair
The session was moderated by Professor Dr. Osama Ahmed Al-Taie.
The conference was attended by notable figures, including Dr. Iyad Baniyan, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Sports Affairs; Professor Dr. Suhail Najm Abdullah, Assistant President of the University of Baghdad for Scientific Affairs; Dr. Amir Faisal Abdul Amir, Assistant President for Administrative Affairs; Dr. Ali Maseer Yassin, President of the Iraqi Academics Syndicate; Dr. Ahmed Riyadh, President of the Iraqi Handball Federation; deans of physical education colleges and departments across Iraq; and a distinguished group of professors and academics from various Iraqi universities. Retired faculty members of the college were also honored for their years of dedicated service.
The conference proceedings will continue on Friday and Saturday, featuring research presentations in designated halls, poster sessions in the indoor basketball court, specialized lectures, and open seminars.
This conference aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals by promoting health and well-being, advancing quality education, fostering gender equality, encouraging innovation and infrastructure development, and strengthening partnerships for sustainable development.
