The College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at the University of Baghdad is the mother college, and the oldest among the colleges of physical education in Iraq. It is a giant sports edifice that produced hundreds of academics, coaches, and experts in the field of physical education. Its history dates back to the year 8391, when for the first time a special section for physical education was opened in the Higher Teachers’ House during the academic year 1938-1939. Seven students were accepted in the first year and 6 students in the second year. This was the first step to prepare the specialized work team. The graduates have a diploma in physical education, and have been appointed as teachers on the secondary staff in the Ministry of Education.

This was the first step in the preparation of the specialized teachers as the graduates were granted a Diploma in Physical Education and were appointed as secondary teachers. Owing to the prevailing political and economic circumstances at the time, the physical education department of the High Teachers’ Institute was abolished and was annexed to the branch of the Primary Teachers’ Institute for the purpose of graduating the primary teachers, this was the first step in the preparation of the specialized teachers as the graduates were granted a Diploma in Physical Education and were appointed as secondary teachers. Owing to the prevailing political and economic circumstances at the time, the physical education department of the High Teachers’ Institute was abolished and was annexed to the branch of the Primary Teachers’ Institute for the purpose of graduating the primary teachers. Until the academic year (1954-1955), the Higher Institute of Physical Education was to be opened for three years. The Institute began on November 15, 1954. The students of the first session started on (5.2.1955), and the institute was affiliated with the Ministry of Education at that time then joined the University of Baghdad in 1958. In the academic year (1960-1961), the study developed and became for a period of four years, and the graduate was granted a Higher Diploma in Physical Education. After that, the institute developed and had clear basic objectives in education in general and physical education in particular at the university, local and Arab levels. Accordingly, the Institute developed into the Faculty of Physical Education in 1967 by a decision of the Council of Ministers, provided that the graduate be granted a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. The college (the institute) has moved since its establishment until now in the following buildings: From the date (1.2.1955) until the end of the academic year: The college occupied large areas that served as halls and was annexed to the official Industry Secondary School and its current location is within the building of the Faculty of Arts. From the year (1955) until the year (1961), the college occupied the house of the late Rashid Ali Al-Kilani in Sulaikh, from the academic year (1961-1962) until the end of the academic year (1962-1963), the college occupied the house of Bahrani in Waziriya. And in the academic year (1963-1964), the college moved to its old building in Al-Waziriya (College of Physical Education for Girls). Currently, the College of Physical Education moved to its new building in Jadriya in (July 1985). The evening study was opened in the college in the academic year 1999, and the first group graduated in the academic year (2002). The study was stopped in (2004).
